Is It Wrong to Try to Pick up Girls in a Dungeon?

Is it wrong to try to pick up girls in a dungeon? Apparently, it isn't.
Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon, also known as Danmachi, was first brought out as a light novel in 2013 and has since produced 11 volumes. There has also been two manga adaptions and an anime which aired in 2015. This comprised of 13 episodes, with a later OVA episode in 2016, then back in February 2018, a second season was announced. Personally, I am waiting for it with a lot of anticipation, and just hope it holds up to the first season, as like with a lot of films and with anime a second season can sometimes be the downfall, but at the same time, it can also be great. I wouldn't want that to happen to this anime, as it's entertaining, and has a unique title. The title leads you to be unsure of what type of anime it is, and it's definitely different to what you think it will be. Simply from hearing the name, you must be thinking that this anime is going to be some romance anime, or a guy making a fool of himself trying to pick up girls, but it isn't. It's an engaging action, adventure anime, yes there is romance but there is also lots of comical moments. It's an anime that if you're not feeling great and want a bit of cheering up, you should definitely check it out.
So what is Danmachi?
Danmachi is all about the world of Orario where people come together to complete a dungeon known as the labyrinth. They collect items and crystals that drop from the monsters in this dungeon to sell in the town. Most who enter this dungeon want fame and fortune by reaching floors others haven't, or collecting more treasure than others. Our story follows a character known as Bell, a young boy who seeks not fame or fortune but girls. He is part of a familia, which means he is part of a group that serves a deity. His deity is Hestia, a well endowed young woman who doesn't have much of what most deities have. Money, or lots of servants. You can tell pretty early on that Bell is Hestia's only servant, and that Bell works very hard to make ends meet for them so they are warm and fed. Bell one day walks into the dungeon and unfortunately is faced with a terrible foe a lot tougher than he is capable of handling. A female adventurer happened to come across him and save his life. From that moment on he has been in love with her and admired her from afar, so he did find his girl in the dungeon, but she doesn't know him or who he is. Meanwhile, he has others falling in love with him, but due to his naivety is unaware of this. Even Hestia herself, only her love goes unnoticed.
Bell is 15 years of age and a solo adventurer. He has a very unique look to him, one of innocence. Every dungeoner has a special skill, but for a long time Hestia lies to Bell and tries to cover up his skill. She says he doesn't have one because she knows what difficulties he will have from his skill.
It being called Learis Freese. This skill accelerates his development and growth based on his strength and feelings, which is a unique skill and the only one of its kind.
All Bell really wants is to rescue a Damsel from the dungeon, but unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it) for Bell, it's the other way around. He becomes the Damsel who is rescued. He then falls in love with this woman, but strangely runs away whenever he sees her, at least before they eventually become friends. There is a lot more to Bell than you first see, but it all becomes apparent the more you watch the anime.
Hestia is Bells's Deity and is charged with his well being, and helping develop his skills as an adventurer. She is also insanely jealous of females who show Bell any attention, an odd thing coming from a Deity. You wouldn't expect them to be jealous of anyone being who they are, but Hestia is unique and definitely not like other Deities -- which becomes apparent later in the anime when you meet various other Deities. Hestia is very loyal to Bell, as well as being in love with him to boot. Hestia wishes to just protect Bell from everyone and everything. She also tries to help with day-to-day living costs by trying to do menial jobs around the city.
Hestia is sweet, but for all her goodheartedness and help she supplies Bell he only sees her as family -- which of course isn't what she wishes for, but she still stays by his side. You can't fault her for that. She seems as though she is a very small Deity to start with, and very underwhelming, but she shortly shows you just what she is capable of achieving if the cause is right.
There are, of course, many other characters with amazing backstories and parts to play. All of these characters help bring this lovely story to life, and help in making Bells journey even bigger -- yes, including the girl he loves. I wonder who you will latch onto, who you will root, and who will speak to you when (not if) you decide to watch Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?
Danmachi has many layers...
... and different parts to it. It's not your typical dungeon crawling anime, and it doesn't just fit into one genre, it fits into many. I enjoyed the anime throughout, and never found it stale or slow at any point as there was always something going on. There is always something making you watch more, and want more. I thoroughly enjoyed it and am definitely looking forward to the next season to see how Bell's story further unfolds, I really hope you check it out if you haven't already. Give it a chance and find the joy in it like I did, you won't be dissapointed.
